How to Downgrade Sony Xperia RAY with Official Gingerbread 2.3 Firmware

Sony Ericsson Xperia RAY users can now easily apply the downgrade to the official Gingerbread 2.3 firmware which will help you to then get an official update for your country via the PC Companion tool. You can also downgrade to this Gingerbread just in case if you feel that ICS still has some bugs and is incompatible with some games and apps. This Gingerbread update can be applied to all the phones which are unlocked. This is the official firmware which we will be discussing in the due course of the article.

In the process of this article, we will be checking out on what are the list of pre requisites which you need to follow along with a detailed tutorial on how to downgrade the firmware of Sony Xperia Ray.
Pre Requisites:
  • All the data like SMS, Contacts, Call log, APN, MMS Settings and other data present in your internal SD should be backed up so that just in case if the data gets erased or corrupted, the same can be restored with the help of below mentioned steps. Remove the SIM card as well as SD Card from your phone as its recommended to remove the same.
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  • Disable all the antivirus suites in your computer and uninstall the same in your device as these tools generally tend to interrupt the process of firmware update. You should have the admin rights in your PC along with the active USB ports with full read / write access.
  • Minimum charge left in the device should be at least 70% so as to ensure that device doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. ADB Should be installed in your computer without which it’s not possible to make use of this procedure.
  • Enable the USB Debugging in your SONY Ericsson Xperia Ray from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked as shown in the below screen capture. (the actual image may differ as with the shown below as its shown of a Samsung Phone)
Procedure 2:1 >> Download Flashtool and the official Gingerbread Rom for xperia ray Xperia Ray Ginger bread Rom (ST18i)_4.0.2.A.0.42_CE :402A042_CE.ftf    2>> Install flashtool on the default directory.  3>> Install the Drivers for Xperia ray flashing, after installing flashtool you can find it on        C:/flashtool/drivers/ Double click on the Flashtool-drivers.exe and install the following drivers 4>> Connect your Ray to the data cable by holding the volume down button. ( remember your phone must be turned off and flash tool is open). After you connect the phone flash tool will connect it in the flash mode.5>> After your ray is connected in flash mode just click on the flash icon, ( the big and first icon below file menu) on the flashtool window. Now check flashmode>OK and then browse to the folder where you have kept the gingerbread firmaware ftf file which you downloaded earlier. 6>> After selecting the "Xperia Ray (ST18i)_4.0.2.A.0.42_CE.ftf" file click on ok leaving the default options as they are flashtool will begin its process.
 7 >> After flashtool finishes the flashing process you are done Downgrading to Gingerbread again.
